    Yes, more on <lj user
So, we're still working on our official mod statement - press release, if you could call it that - but in the meantime, [info]stubbleupdate and I (with some behind the scenes input from [info]schmevil) did an interview with comicmix.com. So if you don't want to wait to read about our account of the 28th, s_d's official position on fair use, and some hints of where we plan to take the community, take a click.

There's an incredible amount of vitriol running around the internet about us, but also a wellspring of support; I've had more people speak up with nice things to say than I can count. You know who you are, and you're awesome. Thank you.

My personal favorite reaction to the suspension is this one. I'm fairly certain it's a parody, but I'm not sure if the commenters have noticed.

This has been some kind of week and a half. Broken laptop keyboard! (Now IT typ/es LIKe THIS and I had TO go GET a nine dollar USB back-up until I can go get m'dear little MacBook serviced... hopefully not for too long.) Visiting [info]xannoside! Avenue Q! [info]reverendjmg and [info]braidsofdeath! The suspension! Actually beating a video game for once, instead of getting extremely confused in the last level! (It was Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney, in case you're wondering.) Flight delayed by snow! Suitcase caught on the conveyor belt! It's good to be home, but I still have a lot to do. Some of it might even be homework.

    And in other news...
Because I've been distracted by various RL and online dramas, I forgot to check up properly on the videos I coudn't return to the library before visiting my brother and make sure to renew them when their week was up...

THIRTEEN DOLLARS IN LIBRARY FINES, HI THERE.

Anyway, erm, I've changed my library e-mail address to make sure that doesn't happen again. Ahem! Also, thank you to the nice library lady who finangled things to prevent me from accruing more fines even though I'm snowed out a few hundred miles away from my local branch.

But speaking of distraction, I should mention that if I do seem a little distracted, it's because I have a lot of stuff going on in my life right now ... I'll explain a little later. I apologize in advance and I'll try not to let it affect my affect, heh, but just to forewarn. Really, this [info]scans_daily thing happened on the best weekend ever.

    Addendum to previous post re:scans_daily
Kathleen David has informed the mod team that she and Peter David have gotten lots of very nasty e-mails regarding their involvement in [info]scans_daily being suspended, namely, blaming them for it all. Now, I'm semi-agnostic on this issue given that a) the various accounts on how this happened are somewhat tangled; b) realistically, the suspension would have happened eventually, sooner or later; c) there are multiple parties who might (or might not) have been able to prevent this by taking different actions - myself amongst them. I don't think dumping it all on one person is a good way to move on from here.

Between that, and, well, basic courtesy, I'm asking all of you who consider yourselves [info]scans_daily members to cut it out. It's just not cool. Besides which, I should point out that the LJ account through which PAD has been commenting on LJ is actually his wife Kathleen's, and not only has she been entirely uninvolved in all this, but she's expressed a hope that we can get our community back.

Please also remember that ironically, scans_daily's membership is getting more scrutiny after the comm's suspension than it has in a while, and whether any of us like it or not, what you say as a scans_daily member reflects on the rest of the community.

In sum, please don't be a jerk to the Davids or anyone else. And please link this around where your fellow members can read it.

    Infopost: suspension of <lj user
Some of you who read my lj are also [info]scans_daily fans, and you may be wondering where the hell the comm's gone. Yes, it has been suspended. Yes, we the mods are looking into our options. In the meantime, we do have a few backups in place. Please check out my fellow mod [info]schmevil's post on the subject for more details, and refer all questions there.

In case anyone's wondering, I'm teetering somewhere between, "Woe is me, that's five years of my life that just got obliterated," cold-blooded analysis of my and others' errors, and deep-set cynicism at cutting off one's nose to spite one's face. Once events have straightened themselves out to whatever extent they will, you'll be hearing from me about this again. I'm sure it'll all work out in the end.

I was going to start this entry with a wish that everyone had a chúc mừng năm mới, but that was two weeks ago. Oh well, I'm saying it anyway. Happy Tết! That's the - ugh - Chinese New Year for you culturally insensitive people (kidding). Fun fact: one of the traditional flowers of this celebration in the region of my family's provenance is hoa mai, or Ochna integerrima, the flower I was named after. I couldn't really tell you why I was named for a shrub that blooms in January when I was born in June - a yellow flower when my mother doesn't like the color, no less. My family is made of these little mysteries.

    Blah blah blah. )

Here's my livejournal. I don't actually hang out at IJ, but some of my friends do, and it's always good to have a back-up.

Happy Thanksgiving! And a meme stolen from [info]krimtastic, for the 5 of you reading this:

Name a character from one of my fandoms, and I'll give you either (a) three facts about them from my personal canon/fanon, (b) a reason he/she sucks, (c) a reason he/she is awesomecakes, (d) three things that never happened to that character or (e) three people that character never fell in love with and why. You pick the character. I pick the letter.

If you're not sure what fandoms I'm in, my interests list is generally pretty accurate.

    Convergence.
[info]dayofjudah: Einstein is a Time Lord. Einstein is also a Doctor, from the Authority. Brilliant. Thank you, David Tennant, for making this crossover possible.
[info]rabican: Hats, unless David Tennant has been in two films about Einstein, the wiki article says that he is Sir Arthur Eddington, not Einstein, who is played by Andy Serkis.
[info]dayofjudah: nooo ;_; my beautiful theory
    [info]rabican: no guys it's okay
[info]i_id: Aah. Gotcha. Then the post I saw was wrong, but same movie.
[info]rabican: a Time Lord is responsible for introducing the theory of relativity to the English-speaking world
[info]i_id: (Jillian, that means that Einstein is instead GOLLUM.)
[info]rabican: and Gollum discovered the Theory of --
    [info]rabican: yes.
    [info]dayofjudah: B(
[info]rabican: I'm quoting this convo, btw
[info]mephron: "It gives us the speed of light, it does, Precious, and it squares it, *gollum gollum*... and then it multiplies it by the mass of the object, and that's the energy, Precious!"

    [discussing this film.]

[info]rae_is: HAH! Experience counts for nothing! He is an Expert! He has Letters After His Name!
    [info]rabican: Exactly!
    [info]rae_is: Oh, man.
[info]rabican: I am just a young whippersnapper! One with ... what's a genteel word for boobs?
    [info]rae_is: "appendages"
[info]rabican: No, I'm pretty sure that's, ahem, for menfolk.
    [info]rae_is: Damn.
    [info]rae_is: Um.
[info]rae_is: Bosoms? Or is that too risqué?
    [info]rabican: Bosom! Yes!
[info]rabican: I am just a young whippersnapper with a heaving bosom! A very ... small heaving bosom, but nevertheless.
    [info]rae_is: Oh, no, no, no.
[info]rae_is: The bosoms aren't an issue at all. You've got the wrong lady bits. Hysteria is caused by Wandering Womb.
    [info]rabican: oh right, of course
    [info]rae_is: heh.
[info]rabican: It's 'cause of the heaving.
[info]rabican: Makes the womb move around.

So my last entry got metaquoted and inspired a community, peoples. [info]lolpoetry - go check it out. Y'all rock. *blush* Thanks to everyone who commented.

In other news, my fish's weekly menu:

SUNDAY - fast day. They pout a lot.
MONDAY - half a frozen, thawed pea, 2x. Gobble gobble.
TUESDAY - 2 pellets per fish, 2x. Note that Grendel's pellets are pre-soaked in vitamin water out of consideration to his digestive troubles.
WEDNESDAY - Pellets in the morning, frozen, thawed brine shrimp in the evening.
THURSDAY - Pellets in the morning, frozen, thawed daphnia soaked in vitamin water in the evening.
    FRIDAY - Pellets.
    SATURDAY - Frozen, thawed bloodworms.

Any of those pellets can be swapped out with Omega brand flakes, but I'm ordering Omega brand betta pellets when I can ... flakes suck, but damn, Omega has awesome ingredients. (Halibut? Cod and salmon? Seriously?)

Why do my fish eat better than I do?

Further note: world's best dollar store purchase for owners of a betta fish - a laser pointer. Comedy gold. "WHY IS IT NOT FOODS?"

    Happy Birthday, Stan Lee!
Stan Lee was born on December 28th, 1922. You probably know him (if you know him) as the creator of characters like Spider-Man, the Hulk, the X-Men, the Fantastic Four, Iron Man, and of course many of their supporting cast members - like Spider-Man's girlfriend and later wife, Mary Jane Watson-Parker.

It was Stan's idea to have MJ and Peter get married in the Spider-Man newspaper strip, a brainstorm that was hastily but, given the characters' strong friendship and long history of on-again off-again romance, strongly followed up on in the main comic. This was in 1987. In the twenty years since, Peter and Mary Jane Parker have quite simply been the coolest couple in comics.

Today, enacting a storyline which Marvel's E-i-C has been wanting to put into place for years, but the current Amazing Spider-Man writer hates so much that he repudiated it on Usenet, the Parker marriage has been dissolved. Not just divorced, no; their romance has officially never happened. Apparently E-i-C Joe Quesada thinks that Peter Parker being married to Mary Jane makes him too old, and that he should be free to have a swingin' single life and download porn.

Well, shucks, Stan. Happy 85th anyway?

ETA: Comments now contain spoilers for upcoming issues of Spider-Man, besides the obvious.

    X-Men reimagined as shojo manga!
    As covered here.

Today at the New York Anime Festival, Marvel and Del Rey announced a joint project which will see their most popular properties produced as Original English Language manga: X-Men and Wolverine - the manga. [...]

X-Men - Written by Raina Telgemeier and Dave Roman with art by the Indonesian artist, Anzu.
Wolverine - Antony Johnston was named as writer, with the artist to be named later. [...]

X-Men will be a shojo style manga, where the Xavier School is still a mutant academy, but it's a all-boys school – with Kitty Pryde, the heroine of the story is the only girl in the school. Kitty is torn between the popular Hellfire Club, led by Pyro, and the school misfits who she eventually bands together as the X-Men.

Okay, I have to admit I am NOT thrilled with some stuff Marvel has been doing lately hands off MJ, damnit! - but as fusions go, this is pretty inspired. I mean, that's the crackiest of both worlds right there. I do hope they can work in other female characters somehow - probably as teachers.

Oh, and Wolverine will be starring in a shonen manga, in a move that surprises no one. Only one question in my mind: will Nightcrawler be making an appearance as a bishonen? Oh, you know you were wondering, too.

Deeply pleased to see Raina Telgemeier and her husband Dave Roman getting high-profile work - I like reading her comic SMILE - a Dental Drama and have actually contemplated reading the *shudders* Babysitters' Club graphic novels to check out more of her stuff. Yes, really, she's that good.
